Random Facts

This morning I ran with "Christian Runners" for the first time. I was given a nice tour of the Ohio River area, both on the Kentucky and Ohio sides, from one of the native Ohioians that was running with me. I thought you might enjoy some random facts I learned from him:
  • The Ohio River is owned by Kentucky, so if you house a boat on the River you must have a Kentucky permit, not Ohio.
  • The Roebling Suspension Bridge was the "practice" for the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. It was built because New York did not think that Roebling's idea of a fully suspended bridge would work.
  • The Brooklyn Bridge has its heaviest weight on it during the marathon when it flattens out because of the elasticity of the connections in the bridge.
  • The Purple People Bridge is the longest bridge that is made for people to walk across in the world. Before being only for people to walk across, it used to be used for cars, people, and trains to cross.
  • Cincinnati is often called Porkopolis because in the late 1800s the main industries in the area were breweries and pork. They took much of the business from Chicago because the city was so involved in the Civil War. This later led to the "Flying Pigs" Marathon that occurs every May.
  • Many people were against the Bengals stadium being built in downtown Cincinnati, especially since it was being primarily paid for by tax payers.

I'll keep you updated if I remember anymore random facts.

Those are pretty cool facts. The Roebling Bridge does look remarkably like the Brooklyn Bridge. That whole story is fascinating.

How did you like the Christian Runners? Sounds perfect for you!

Those are really cool facts! I'm going to send the bridge ones to my bro (Bubba)- he's a civil engineer and thinks bridges are cool.
