Today is my last working day before school starts. Basically I have been in meetings and staff development meetings most of the week. Here's the rundown:
Monday: New Teacher Orientation. We mostly just did all of the boring paperwork for benefits, etc. At the end of the day one of the presenters referred to it as "Crap Day."
Tuesday: I only did stuff at school for an hour and fifteen minutes. I talked Brent into going with me and help a little. He was very helpful and has been each time he's gone with me this year. My goal was to have the room ready before we left and we made 100 on our goal!
Wednesday: Staff Development on Vocabulary. We went through the book Building Academic Vocabulary and one of the author's, Deborah Pickering, spoke to us. We learned some really neat strategies for teaching vocabulary and the importance of choosing a few words to focus on so that we don't overwhelm ourselves or our students.
Thursday: "Housekeeping" day at school. Those of you teachers know exactly what I am talking about. You know the day when you have to go through the student handbook and set up stuff with all of your kids' names on it. That was my day. However, I was really excited because I get to take part in a district lap-top iniative in my classroom 8 times this year with all of the fourth grade classes.
Today: We have a meeting this morning at the Florence Freedom Stadium for a "Back To School" something or other with everyone from the district. Then we get to work in our classrooms for the rest of the day. John and Mary Ann (my in-laws) are coming through tonight. As requested, I will take pictures of my classroom next week. There are two things that are going on the wall that the kids are going to do that are necessary for my masterpiece to be complete.
As Brent told me before he left for work this morning, "Your nine-month long marathon is about to begin."

That is a great way to put it-9 month long marathon! He is a clever one, that Brent! Sounds like things are going great and I can't wait to see the pictures!
What a cool comparison, Brent. Enjoy the marathon. I'm running a two year one in Thailand! :)
9 month marathon indeed. Yowza! ;)
Sounds like you got all the 'boring' stuff out of the way and all that's left is the fun stuff. Meeting the kids, learning their personalities, and just enjoying them. You'll have a GREAT year!
I can not wait to see the pictures. And how cool about the lap top initiative.
