Fun on Friday

About a week ago, I asked my kids, "What do you want to learn about in science?" Well, one group of students decided that they wanted to learn about Endangered Animals. They decided that their "proof" would be brochures (I had shown them how to use Publisher about two weeks prior) to show their information.

The other group of students wanted to learn about Chemistry... to blow things up!

Yesterday afternoon we spent about an hour and a half outside doing just that. Our scientific question was "Which combination of solid and liquid will make the film canister lid pop off the furthest from the starting point?"

Our solids: baking soda, mentos, pop-rocks, spearmint gum, and alka-seltzer.
Our liquids: vinegar, diet coke, sprite, and water.

Yes, we experimented with all 20 combinations. And who won? Flying over 230cm away from the X, the baking soda and vinegar took the prize home. This was a great way to spend a Friday afternoon the week before school lets out. Only 2 more days...

What fun! Bear and Little Son have done the Diet Coke and Mentos experiment and had a great time with it!

I agree, what fun!

And I have the video to go with the experiment.

I have a few more ideas up my sleeve for summer fun. I might try the baking soda & vinegar. The boys would get a huge kick out of that one too.
