Orientation

Last night I met my new students for the 2010-2011 school year. Here are a few fun stories from the experience.

First, I was talking to a mom and girl who was in my class last year when the little sister, maybe 3 or 4 years old, came up to me and stated, quite bluntly, "What is in your belly?"
I replied, just as frankly, "A baby."
"Well, I want to see it!" The conversation continued trying to explain to the little, innocent child why I could not just pull it out for her to see.

Second, the 5th graders were constantly gawking, then telling their friend how they needed to come gawk, at my huge belly. A few brave soles, mostly those who had me the year before, came to share their opinions themselves, but most just whispered through the hallways, "Have you seen Mrs. Carney?"

Lastly, a teacher tradition after Orientation each year is to go out for Mexican at this little tiny place up the street from school. When we got there, which I only go once a year, the man who owns the place looked at me and said, "You got pregnant."
I replied, "Uh, yeah," thinking Good observation...
He continued with, "Who got you pregnant."
"My husband." What did he expect me to say? The mailman?

So now I'm off for Day 2 of workdays and completely exhausted! I slept better last night than in weeks and weeks. Tomorrow is the first day for students. Will I be there? Only time will tell. We go to the doctor this afternoon at 3:30 to find out the latest status of our child's impending birth. Updates will follow!
