On a serious note: Yesterday one of the fifth grade teachers came up to me and handed me a letter. "It's from one of your students. Their assignment was to write a letter of thanks to their favorite teacher." Already I'm flattered! Then I began to read.
Before I tell you what it said, I must write that I expected something like this, "You were great. We had so much fun. I loved the activities and the ways you taught us." which would be normal for this type of thing.
Not this child! The entire letter was about how she had become a better person from being in my class. She learned the importance of getting along with other people, even if they were different from her and that being herself is more important than popularity.
Seriously, I almost cried. I was no longer flattered, but feeling like maybe I'm not wasting my time after all! THIS is the reason I love my job! She got it! I'm so thankful for my kids!
On a not so serious note: Last week I went to a math conference where they gave away door prizes. I won two: free lunch for figuring out a pattern of numbers quickly (the guy handed me a $10 bill!) and a tennis ball on a rope for Wilson. Well, after seeing how the toy was made, Brent said that he would prefer that we only give it to Wilson when we're around so that he does not choke on it if he tears it apart. So I hung it on the back of our bedroom door. This is what happened:
Can't you tell he's thankful for his toys and his family?

Melissa, you *are* that kind of teacher. You let kids be themselves, warts & all. You sneak in your faith when it's called for. I loved when you would tell me conversations you'd have with J about belief & faith. You teach kids that sometimes in life you have to deal with people you don't like. All of that PLUS reading, writing, math, science, & social studies. Every child (even J's old friend ;) ) is better for having you as their teacher. I truly mean that. I am so thankful that J got to experience YOU. And you experienced him. ;) You deserved that letter and so much more.
Love that Wilson!
Happy Thanksgiving! Much love & blessings to you & Brent.
What a blessing to receive such a letter! You're doing a great job!
LOVE the video of Wilson! He's a cutie!
